Central Bank of India is one of the largest commercial banks in India. A government-owned enterprise, it is one of the oldest banks in India. With its headquarters in Mumbai, the bank has more than 4000 branches and more than 250 extension counters across India.
Central Bank of India also has one overseas office in Zambia (a joint venture with Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, and the Zambian government). Recently it has also opened a representative office at Nairobi, Kenya. The bank is also planning to open representative offices in five more locations - Singapore, Doha, Dubai, Hong Kong and London.
The Central Bank of India was established on 21st December 1911 by Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala. Sir Pherozeshah Mehta was its first Chairman. It has the distinction of being the first commercial Indian bank completely owned and managed by Indians. It acquired the Tata Industrial Bank in 1923 and was nationalized in 1969 as part of the nationalization policy of the Indian Government.
