Allahabad Bank was founded in 1865 by a group of Englishmen at Allahabad. It has its head-quarters in Kolkata and is the oldest joint stock bank in India.
The bank has over 2500 branches all over India. Allahabad bank has also a branch in Hong Kong and a representative office in Shenzen, mainland China.
Together with 13 other banks, Allahabad Bank was nationalised on 19 July 1969 by the Government of India. In 1989, Allahabad Bank acquired United Industrial Bank and two years later, the bank established AllBank Finance Ltd, a wholly owned Merchant Banking subsidiary. The government's ownership of Allahabad Bank currently stands at 55.23%.
