Oriental Bank of Commerce is one of the public sector banks in India. It was founded at Lahore but within four years of coming into existence, the bank had to face partition and the registered office was shifted from Lahore to Amritsar.
After many many ups and downs in the 1970s, the bank was nationalised in 1980. At that time the bank had a total working of Rs 483 crores. It was ranked 19th among the 20 nationalised banks in the country but slow and gradually, the OBC turned into one of the most efficient and best performing banks within a decade.
Oriental Bank of Commerce is credited with having the lowest staff cost with highest productivity in the Indian banking industry.
